Summer Field Trip:

Saturday 3rd September: Stanwick Earthworks
Please reserve this date in your diary, as Yvonne Luke is currently organising a visit to the Stanwick site, described in Colin Haselgrove’s March lecture. AHA Hogg said “these earthworks are the most notable in the north of England”. Current plans assume our meeting at the church at Stanwick St John (NZ 185.120) at ca.12am, for an introduction to the site and to Colin’s 1980’s excavations. After a picnic in the church yard, we will visit key areas of the 3km of surrounding earthworks, enclosing more than 50 acres. At Mortimer Wheeler’s 1951-2 excavation trench, we will see that the rampart top is c.7m above the restored ditch base.

The trip will be Free. However, as there is no public transport, we will need to travel in cars. With limited car parking around the earthworks, it may be desirable to initially gather in Richmond, before progressing to the site in a limited number of fully-loaded vehicles. Details of the final arrangements will be circulated in a subsequent Newsletter, - so watch this space!
