YAS – Prehistory Research Section: Newsletter No 20

2010-11 Programme of Activities

Summer Visit:

Thursday, 22nd July 2010. Eleven of our members visited Blaise Vyner’s excavations at Stoup Brow, Ravenscar, where he was investigating features revealed by the 2003 moor-fire. In poor weather, our hardy group was then taken by Paul Brown to see some of the nearby rock-art, first identified by Stuart Feather some fifty years ago, but then ‘lost’ until revealed by the fire.

Winter Lecture Programme:

Saturday 4th December 2010 : 1400hrs at Claremont for our Xmas meeting:-

“Archaeology in Quarries in Northern England: some Recent Discoveries and Hot Topics”
Dr Clive Waddington of Archaeological Research Services Ltd will talk about the challenges of landscape archaeology on quarry sites and some of the resulting prehistoric sites discovered.

“The Earliest Humans in the Yorkshire Dales: Understanding the Archaeological Record”
Tom Lord, from the Winskill Farm Visitor Centre (which the Section visited in August 2008), will update us on recent developments in our understanding of Palaeolithic settlement in the Dales.

After these talks, Keith Boughey will distribute our 2011 Prehistory Section Bulletin ( No48) to all paid-up members at this meeting – so do come along (with postal cost of £115 for No47 last year, a good turn-out will hopefully help us to reduce this circulation bill).

Tea Break: We’ll then gather for our customary tea and Xmas treats [NB for any new members, if you have any particular festive weakness, you are welcome to bring it along].

Saturday, 5th March 2011: 1400hrs at Claremont; Section AGM, (details in 1Q11), preceded by:-

“Re-discovery of Gristhorpe Man”
Drs Nigel Melton & Janet Montgomery of the University of Bradford will tell us about their recent re-examination of the EBA inhumation and its log-coffin, originally excavated in 1832 on the cliffs, south of Scarborough. By applying a wide range of modern scientific techniques, they have transformed our understanding of this burial, aptly described as the ‘local big man’ in their recent Antiquity article (2010, Vol 86, No 325, p796-815)

The talk will be followed by the Section’s AGM.

End Note: The research seminars, organised by the Archaeological Dept of Bradford University, have resumed. Meetings are held on Tuesdays, starting at 17.15hr [to c.18.30hrs]. If you are interested, contact the Hon Sec for more details. Prehistoric topics this autumn include:-

26th Oct: Dr Peter Halkon on IA East Yorkshire

23rd Nov: Dr Roy Loveday on Cursus Monuments
